Project Officer, Language Immersion, Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL)
Myra Gorey is an Eastern Arrernte woman and first-language speaker from Ltyentye Apurte, now living in Mparntwe. Her lived experience and cultural grounding shape her strong commitment to keeping Arrernte language strong for current and future generations.
As Project Officer for Language Immersion at CALL, Myra plays a key role in designing, trialling, evaluating, and strengthening a new language immersion program. She works closely with the CALL team, Elders, and community members to build culturally safe learning environments where people can be fully surrounded by their language in natural, everyday ways. Together with the CALL team, her work will help establish an immersion model that can later be adapted to support other First Nations languages.
Myra holds a Bachelor in Community Management and is currently completing a Certificate IV in Teaching a First Nations Language, giving her a strong foundation in language teaching, program delivery, and community-led project work. She also brings valuable experience in research and evaluation, which she undertakes in ways that honour Indigenous worldviews, cultural integrity, community voice, and respectful ways of working.
With her first-language fluency, cultural knowledge, and experience supporting community-driven projects, Myra is a key contributor to creating a strong, sustainable immersion program that will help Arrernte—and, in time, other First Nations languages—continue to grow and thrive.
