Language Project Officer / Lecturer, Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL)
Lavinia Heffernan is a Luritja–Pintupi first-language speaker from Papunya Community and is now based in Mparntwe. She holds a Bachelor of General Studies (Education) and brings more than ten years of experience as a NAATI certified interpreter and translator.
She has delivered translation services for several high-profile national projects, including the Voice to Parliament campaign and the Big J and Little Cuz television program. Her interpreting and translation practice spans government, private sector, and community contexts, with a particular emphasis on supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language interpreters and speakers. Through this extensive professional engagement, she has developed a nuanced understanding of the Australian language services sector, including its systemic opportunities, emerging needs, and structural challenges.
Lavinia also brings extensive experience in training interpreters nationally. She is currently employed by the Batchelor Institute’s Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL) and works with the VET team to deliver language certificate training. Over the years, she has worked closely with many Central Australian languages across the Northern Territory. Her work reflects strong leadership, professionalism, and a commitment to high-quality language education and support.
In addition to her professional roles, Lavinia holds leadership positions with Finke River Mission and Yirara College, and she contributes to national language policy. As a speaker, editor, moderator, and trainer of interpreters and language speakers across Australia, she is dedicated to strengthening language services and elevating the work of others in the sector.
